ENDEAVOUR YACHT ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA INC A001744SL

EYAV History

The Endeavour Yacht Association of Victoria (EYAV) currently operates from the host club, Hobsons Bay Yacht Club, located at the historic seaport of Williamstown. The Endeavour fleet sails constantly with some of Victoria's most famous yachts and still performs remarkably well in competition. There are over forty yachts on our EYAV register, which ensures that Endeavours are still a formidable presence on Port Phillip.

The EYAV began in Victoria in 1969 with Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron (RMYS) acting as host club. Frank Konkoly was the foundation President and Secretary of the Association and his yacht 'Balaton' was the first Endeavour 24 on Port Phillip. Two other foundation members at that time and are still EYAV members are Frank Hammond, Managing Director of Horizon/ Hammond Sails, at that time with an Endeavour 24 'Charissa', and Bill Whelpton and his Endeavour 24 'Masumi'. Bill went on to win many EYAV trophies and won the Endeavour 24 State Championship in 1984, '88 and '95. Bill now lives in Bairnsdale and in 2001, is still winning races with 'Masumi' on the Gippsland Lakes. Frank Hammond won the Endeavour 24 State Championship with 'Charissa' in 1976 against a crowded field of twenty-four entrants. 'Charissa' went on to win the Championship another four times with new skipper and EYAV Past President, Norman Poole.

The Endeavour was one of the most successful class yachts on Port Phillip and still continues to be a credit to the originator, Reg Gardner. The Endeavours are competitive club racers, are a comfortable strong and safe family cruiser, are easy to maintain and great fun to sail.

Endeavour 24 and 26 State Championships are run each year and distance events, cruise and social events are run throughout the year. Most EYAV members are also members of other yacht clubs and are represented at the ten senior Victorian yacht clubs. An EYAV newsletter is produced four times per year.
