EYAV AGM 2007

Mark, EYAV Secretary/ Treasurer and Frank, EYAV President, prepare the trophies for presentation at HBYC clubrooms.

The EYAV Annual General Meeting and Trophy Presentation will be held at HBYC on Sunday July 29, 1200 to 1400 hrs. This is a great opportunity to catch up on all the Endeavour Yacht conversation where the skippers compare and share ideas. With 15 Endeavours belonging to HBYC there are plenty of yachts to view. A BYO BBQ lunch is planned and take-away food shops are close by if required. HBYC Bar is available for refreshments.

Check out the trophy recipients on page 4.

Join us at the AGM, take advantage of the spectacular views across Hobsons Bay to the Melbourne skyline!

HBYC BRASS MONKEY Series is one of the most popular winter yacht races in Hobsons Bay, particularly with yachts from HBYC, RYCV and RMYS. The series runs from May to August with Saturday races run each fortnight with a total of 9 races for the series. Spinnaker and Non - Spinnaker divisions are equally supported with a total of 100 yachts competing in the event, which is run as a pursuit series. Warm wet weather gear is a must for this series as the conditions are well suited to the name of the race. The first three of these races are also the Endeavour 24 Handicap and Scratch Titles (for more info check out page 2). After five races three E24s are currently in the top ten positions, Imp, Cathmarine and Puff. An impressive performance against some of Port Phillip's fastest yachts.

Congratulations to all EYAV members for their 2007 performance in their respective clubs.

Rug up warm for your Winter Sailing, Cheers, Frank.

President's Report

EYAV continues to grow and keep Endeavours Yachts an inspiring class.

  • 2007 has been an exciting year for the Endeavour fleet as eager new owners have begun sailing their performance proven E24 & E26 yachts. Competition stimulates activity on the water and contributes to greater sailing skills. The slips have been busy with Endeavour refits, rigging, new masts, sails & repaints to ensure the yachts look as good as they sail. Many skippers of larger more expensive yachts are often surprised to be out-sailed by a nimble Endeavour.
  • EYAV members' enthusiasm is our Association's greatest strength, always sharing information and offering assistance to one another continues to make the Endeavour Class a significant performer in yachting.
  • Our 2007/ 2008 sailing calendar will be prepared over the coming months, let us know your ideas.
  • Our sponsors are always ready to help you with their expert advice, they were all chosen for their knowledge & experience with Endeavour yachts and they enjoy helping you with your queries, don't hesitate to contact them. Check them out http://www.users.bigpo nd.com/msheahan/eyavsupport.htm

    Safe and Happy Sailing.

Frank Rendell, EYAV President.

E24 Handicap and Scratch Titles

The E24 & E26 Scratch and Handicap races are run in conjunction with the first 3 races in the HBYC non-spinnaker Brass Monkey Series (Refer to article on page 1).

Race 1. Saturday 05 May 2007 saw 40 yachts start, only 3 E24s entered and no E26s. A challenging day for yachts & crews, from the race start to finish the wind varied between 4 to 22 knots, dropping out completely twice in the early stages, and changed direction from E, NE, N, NW, W & SW. All yachts responded well to the challenge with only 10 minutes separating the first 20 yachts crossing the finish line. On handicap, Puff was 12 th , Cathmarine 14 th & Imp 15 th ; off scratch, Imp was 13 th , Puff 14 th & Cathmarine 15 th .
A very creditable result for the E24s to finish amongst some of the larger fastest yachts on the Bay.

Race 2. Saturday 19 May 2007, with a forecast of N, NW, W winds of 15/ 20/ 30 knots it looked like a robust day's sailing. Most yachts chose shorter sails for the event, however, with N to W winds the waves did not come up and the flat seas & brisk winds provided a fast exciting race. 75 yachts entered the race, 55 turned up for the start and 6 did not finish. Interestingly, amongst these expensive competitive racing yachts our three Endeavour 24's just missed out on a podium finish in the non spinnaker division with Mark in Cathmarine 4 th , Russell in Imp 5 th and Frank in Puff 6 th . Only 3 minutes separated the first 6 yachts, a very exciting race.

Race 3. Saturday 02 June 2007, After 12 days of 30 knot winds, some over 50 knots, our last race was sailed in 1 to 5 knots. The wind blew from every quarter of the compass with a race start of N then NE, E, SE, S, SW, W, NW back to N, the fluctuating wind strength and direction bunched up the field, leading to jumbled yachts at nearly every turning mark. 90 yachts entered, 72 started with 7 not finishing, the E24s did extremely well again on handicap with Mark in Cathmarine 4 th , Russell in Imp 11 th , and Frank in Puff 13 th .
Geoff was able to join us with Geondy for the last race and finished a bit further back in the field.

The final results were very close with the Endeavour 24 Scratch Trophy going to Russell with Imp, Mark with Cathmarine and Frank with Puff were equal second. The Endeavour Handicap Trophy was won by Mark with Cathmarine, Russell with Imp and Frank with Puff were equal second. This has been a splendid series with outstanding performances by the competitors and this concludes our 2007 Endeavour Race Season.

A complete list of Endeavour races and results are on page 4.

Cathmarine, Imp and Puff will continue with the HBYC Brass Monkey Series to be completed in August 2007.

MORE SAILING TIPS FROM KERRY GIBSON SAILMAKER
reprinted from EYAA Tuning Tips for Your Endeavour - Part 3

SOME TIPS ON HANDLING SLOPPY CONDITIONS

Do not attempt to point high. Sail lower but with more twist in the sails. Carry maximum draft well forward with increase in the luff tension.
GENOA CAR
If your headsail is flat - car should go more forward.
If headsail is full - car should come back.
If slop is head on - car should be forward.
MAINSAIL
Keep draft in the middle, however, as wind gets stronger, more draft forward.
CREW WEIGHT
Have no weight in the ends of the boat; keep all crew together in the centre.

LIGHT WEATHER SPINNAKER WORK IN THE SLOP
Tack down wind to assist the spinnaker. However, if the wind is fresh there is no need to tack.
BROAD OR SHY REACHING
1. Let off back stay
2. Let off the vang
3. Ease the mainsail well down the track and ease the main sheet off, trying to get the top leeward wool tuft on the mainsail to flow
4. Move Genoa car well forward, trying to make the headsail wool tufts flow

SPINNAKER WORK -SQUARE OR THREE QUARTER RUN - FRESH TO STRONG WINDS
1. Consider using No.2 Spinnaker.
2. Using tweekers move the sheeting position more forward than usual, and carry the spinnaker pole a little further forward than usual.
3. Ease the back stay off for all down wind runs up to approximately 20 knots.

HOW TO MAKE AN ENDEAVOUR POINT BETTER
1. To point high, effectively, can only be obtained when good boat speed is reached.
2. The bottom of the hull must be in good condition.
3. The sail shape and the sail design must be right for the conditions.
4. The mast must be in tune, correctly positioned in the boat, flexible and not be overweight for racing.
5. The sail trim must be correct.
6. The correct sail selection for apparent wind conditions.
7. No drag from a folding propeller.
8. The weight distribution of crew and stores must be correct and no unnecessary equipment on board.

For good pointing, all of the above items must be correct. If you are satisfied with all the above items and you feel the boat is still not pointing well, take both your Genoa and mainsail to your sailmaker. He will examine the cloth because it may have stretched out of shape. If this is the case, then no amount of recruiting can fix the problem. However, if some resilience is still present in the sailcloth then a recut may useful.

Warren Eggins compiled the EYAA Tuning Tips for Your Endeavour , which I have found very useful.
Warren kindly gave us permission to reproduce the section above.
