The competition should beware; Mark is sailing faster than ever and is keen to compete against all comers in the EYAV 2008 racing season. The photo above was taken by new EYAV member Peter Williams, more on Peter on page 3.

President's Report

  • 2008 Sailing season welcomes the summer and increased activities on the water. Your yacht is ready to go and so are you and your crew, make sure you have your latest Victorian Recreational Boating Safety Handbook and refresh your knowledge on the safety rules and requirements. Our EYAV members are very important to us & you owe it to your family, crew & yourself to be an inspiration toward safer sailing.

  • Hobsons Bay Yacht Club (HBYC) Vice Commodore came up with the idea for yacht owners to do a story on their yachts. I got a call that it was my turn to do a story on my E24 PUFF. It sounded like a fun thing to do so you will see the story on page 4. Seeing the President has started the ball rolling the Secretary/ Treasurer Mark Sheahan said he would take care of the autumn edition, next March we will have Mark's story on E24 CATHMARINE. We would like to hear from one of our members for the June issue.

  • Safe and Happy Sailing.

Frank Rendell, EYAV President

Palau Adventures update with Mihnea aboard E24 Sea Gypsy

I had a very good sailing weekend on my E24 Sea Gypsy, going from Koror Island, passing Ulong Island, all the way thought the reefs to 11 Islands, where we anchored in a small bay surrounded by reefs and islands with beaches. We spent the night on a beach, having Spanish mackerel barbecue (we caught it trolling on our way there) and in the morning back on Sea Gypsy, heading to Fantasy Island. Palau has very strong currents due to the tide exchange and the reefs, so buying a 15 HP Enduro Yamaha, proved to be a good idea.

For the next night we had a little bit of trouble, anchoring the boat; we were in a channel, that we couldn't see the bottom, next to a reef that was one foot deep on low tide. The drop off was very steep, so we had to anchor in the deep channel. We dropped two anchors with all the line it had, about 150 feet and we prayed for light currents and wind.
Which we had in that night!!! But not in the next day when we had to face the open ocean to get our boat home!!!
We got caught in a squall with strong winds and no visibility whatsoever!!! We just motored back and forth until we could start to see the islands around and then slowly-slowly we got in to the channel to motor our self back home!!!

I want to emphasize one thing!!! Palau is a beautiful place, with very friendly and opened people; with a reef barrier around the famous Rock Islands, having one of the best diving spots in the world, Blue Hole and Blue Corner, with beautiful isolated beaches (the Survivor Show is filming again right now), with isolated marine lakes with thousands of jellyfish, where you can swim around them with no problem; with a multitude of corals and fish, that you just have to jump off the boat and snorkel around them, or just troll behind your boat a line with a lure and you have enough fresh fish for a big family!!!!
What is so difficult here, that many sailors are very afraid…..navigation through the reefs, where you have to use charts, otherwise you end up aground like Captain Henry Wilson on Ulong reef of Palau. !!!!
But imagine that…this is what I like the most!!!!!! A sailing day on an Australian 18 footer skiff might be not so demanding like a day on my E24 through the reefs!!!!
Cheers, Mihnea

Endeavours on the Move

New Member Peter Williams has purchased E26 RAINBOW CONNECTION, which is currently on the slip at the Lagoon Boat Club. Peter reports they have cleaned her up inside and now there are no leaks or soggy lockers. They will varnish the bulk head and repair the head to improve the interior. On the outside they will cut & polish the hulland strip off the old antifoul (looks like 20 plus years of paint build up.
The yacht now has new VHF & 27 MHz radios main sheet, vang & mainsail, as the old ones were in worse condition than first thought. Peter is also fitting a forward mounted traveller as the original system is hard to use.
RAINBOW CONNECTION is a pleasant yacht to sail and just the right size for Peter and his wife to cruise around Corio Bay and the Outer Harbour.

E24 CHARISSA is being restored by new member Andrew Keir. CHARISSA is one of our famous E24s & won the 1976 E24 State Championship owned & skippered by Frank Hammond, Managing Director of Horizon Sails. Later in her distinguished career CHARISSA owned & skippered by then EYAV President Norman Poole, won the State Titles in 1989, 1990, 1991 & 1993. Both Frank & Norman said they will provide information to Andrew as he restores CHARISSA to her former glory. By the way, our first 2008 EYAV event is the CHARISSA trophy to be held Feb 3rd .

E24 SANDPIPER has been purchased by new member David Barry who has been quietly preparing for the summer sailing season. New Year's Eve SANDPIPER quietly slipped from her mooring & gently sailed out into Hobsons Bay for the best position to watch the New Year's Fireworks display. We think we are going to see a much higher profile from SANDPIPER in 2008.

L-R GEONDY and SANDPIPER

As we “go to press” two famous E24's have changed hands, we expect to hear from the new owners in the next week.
E24 IMP, 5 time winner of the E24 State Championship, has a new owner as has GEONDY which has been extensively restored to as new condition. Details of the new skippers when the information comes to hand. Three other E24s that changed hands in 2007 have entered the EYAV 2008 season's activities. ROCKET SCIENCE owner/ skipper James Walshe, SPRITE owner/ skipper Kevin Moles, KARINA owner/ skipper Noel Robbins.

JESTER

E24 JESTER is undergoing final restoration after 12 months hard work, owner skipper Michael Oakley says he can hardly wait to be at the helm again and is ready to test all the go fast changes to JESTER. What a wonderful opportunity it would be if JESTER could be ready for the 2008 State Championship which begins Feb 24th .

“PUFF” H21 – Owner/ Skipper Frank Rendell

I bought PUFF just before Christmas 1998, I had been sailing for three years and I was ready for my second yacht. I knew what I wanted, a seaworthy well designed yacht, not too big so I could handle it comfortably on my own and competitive performance so I could have fun in club racing.

The Endeavour 24 fitted the profile perfectly; these yachts have been racing actively on Port Phillip since 1969 and many famous Victorian yachtsmen gained their sailing skills aboard an Endeavour yacht.

PUFF was just right, an E24 Mk2, fully commissioned by Endeavour Yachts and launched in 1985, with an attractive cabin fit-out including dinette, sleeping accommodation for four adults and plenty of varnished wood inside to make it feel like a classic yacht. Halyards and control lines operational from the cockpit to make solo sailing a delight. Instruments installed; anemometer with true and apparent wind direction, boat speed, log, VMG, depth sounder with anchor alarm. Even down to my VHF Radio Telephone, tinted windows and aluminium toe rails PUFF was just right, I fell in love with her at first sight.
I became the President of the Endeavour Yacht Association of Victoria (EYAV) in 2000.

PUFF was initially purchased by a Melbourne Doctor and located at Western Port where she was berthed at Hastings. A new owner, John Hodgson (an experienced HBYC Skipper) then brought PUFF to HBYC where she had a few years successful racing.

PUFF had never been fitted with a spinnaker, so one of my first tasks was to prepare her for serious spinnaker work for the Endeavour Championships. The existing sail inventory was a #2 and # 3 in excellent condition, but no Genoa so we added two second hand #1's, one light and one heavy duty plus a radial head spinnaker with cross cut base to complement our sail wardrobe. A GPS and autohelm were added to assist my solo sailing, in nine years PUFF and I have sailed 5,000 nautical miles, more than half of which has been sailed solo.

PUFF's Sailing Achievements 1999 to 2007

63 podium finishes including:
EYAV E24 State Championship, 2000/ 2002/ 2003/ 2004/ 2005
